  • Bowden National Fish Hatchery: Produces more than 160,000 pounds of catchable fish each year, including the golden and brown trout used to stock area rivers.
  • Bowden Cave: 7 1/2 mile charted area.
  • Smoke Hole Cavern: Used by Seneca Indians to smoke their meat.
  • Blackwater Falls State Park: Blackwater Falls State Park is named for the falls of the Blackwater River whose waters plunge five stories then twist and tumble through an eight-mile long gorge. The falls are one of the most photographed sites in West Virginia. Read more.
  • Cannan Valley State Park & Ski Area: Cross-country, downhill, and snowboarding. 34 slopes--ranging from beginner to advanced runs--with a vertical drop of 850 feet and the longest run at 6,000 feet. 30 kilometers of marked, ungroomed cross-country trails. Read more.
  • Spruce Knob / Seneca Rocks: National Recreation Area
  • Monogahela National Forest: Multi-use trails are suitable for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding. Excursions led by experienced guides. Several recreation areas. (1/4 of Randolph county lies within the National Forest.)
  • Kumbrabow State Forest: Idyllic setting with fishing, hunting, and mountain biking in 10,000 acre area.Located on Rich Mountain, just off Rt. 219 at Huttonsville.
    Stuart Recreation Area Ski Trail: Cross-country Skiing on 2.5 mile trail. This is a good trail for beginners and short excursions. Located 5 miles East of Elkins off Rt. 33.
  • Alpena Gap: Built by the CCC in the early 1930s. Picnicking, hiking trails, scenic beauty, nature study. Located 9 miles from Bowden off Rt. 33.
  • Bear Haven Recreation Area: This area is for those persons who like to read books, hike, or just relax and enjoy the solitude that surrounds them. A remote area and very secluded. North of Bowden off Rt. 33
  • Otter Creek Wilderness Area: 20,000-acre wilderness recreation area with access to hiking trails. An area is set aside for wilderness recreation and provides outstanding opportunities for hiking, spelunking, camping, fishing and nature study.

Historic Sites:

  • Davis & Elkins College: Highly ranked liberal arts college founded in 1904 with picturesque campus; located in nearby Elkins. Read more.
  • Graceland Mansion: Built 1981-93, summer home of Henry Gassaway Davis, co-founder of Elkins; house named for daughter, Grace, and now part of the college. Read more.
  • Halliehurst Mansion: Built in 1889 by Stephen B. Elkins, co-founder of Elkins; named for his wife, Hallie. Now part of Davis & Elkins College. A National Historic Landmark.
  • Downtown Elkins Historic District: 1893-1940 with late Victorian and early 20th c. architecture; covers 61 buildings and 28 acres. Read more.
  • Rich Mountain Battlefield: Site of an early Civil War battle where a Union victory provided control of western counties and allowed for the new state of West Virginia to be formed. On the Register of National Historic Places. Near Beverly.
  • Cheat Summit Fort (Fort Milroy): Constructed by Union troups in 1861 to control Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike. Listed on the Register of National Historic Places.
  • Cass Scenic Railroad: Excursion to transport you back in time to the era of steam-driven locomotives. Read more.
  • The Old Mill: Historic water-powered grist mill dating to 1877 and now a museum with local arts and crafts. Sited one mile north of Harmon.
